What is WAN Optimization?

In order to understand the implications of WAN optimization, it’s important to first understand the two types of networks that commonly exist. A LAN, or local area network, is a common sight in homes and businesses. These allow a series of computers, connected by network cables to a central switch, to share files, printers and an internet connection securely and reliably. A WAN on the other hand, is a wide area network, and the only commonly seen specimen of these is the internet itself.

LANs have an advantage in being tidily designed (usually), secure and fast. However, they have the disadvantage of being bound to physical locations, a problem for businesses with multiple locations or no central location at all. Use of the internet to handle the cooperative data handling, communications and logistics/analytics which businesses thrive on used to be pretty much impossible. The internet was slow, unreliable and highly insecure. However, with the advent of better internet speeds and better infrastructure to support it, using WAN for business (beyond paltry website hosting and email) is at long last possible.

So, what’s the optimization of WAN optimization about? While the internet’s faster and better-constructed than it once was, it’s still a maze and not terribly secure by default. WAN optimization is the process of calibrating all of a business’ machines, software and infrastructure to get the most speed and efficiency across the internet, while achieving security as close as possible to that of a LAN.

Small and medium businesses cannot afford to skip WAN optimization, which can help to reduce overhead greatly. With little to no need for expensive local servers and custom-built infrastructure, these businesses can make full use of digital business solutions as readily as big corporations with limitless budgets. On top of this, it allows employees to access data safely from home, work or while traveling, from any device due to much of the infrastructure being cloud web solutions, when WAN optimized.

However, there is a caveat with using WAN. Security over the internet simply cannot match that of LAN communications, no matter how many layers of protocol and encryption are used. Good security can be had with help from an experienced and reliable IT support company in San Diego, but there is always more risk than with a closed system. Also, given the internet spans practically the whole planet, rather than some cables in a building or house, it’s far more susceptible to failure.

On the whole, though, WAN optimization is a great strategy to harness modern digital technology for easy use by small and medium businesses, and is absolutely worth the risk if caution is used.
