Do You Read the EULA Before Installing Software?

We’re always advised to read the fine print, but admittedly, it’s not something that everyone does, especially when it comes to the lengthy EULAs associated with new software.

It may seem unimportant, but there are benefits to reading an EULA before installing software. The End User License Agreement (EULA) is the agreement between vendor and user that establishes both parties’ expectations for use of software. The user has to accept the EULA. Otherwise, the user will get that pop-up saying the Set-Up will end.

The fact is agreeing to the EULA without fully reading or understanding it is pretty much like signing a contract without reading it. And as experienced San Diego information technology consultants, we can tell you that that’s never a good thing!

Example of Agreeing to a EULA You Don’t Read

Imagine downloading the latest version of your internet browser. You get to the EULA box, click on the agreement button and let the installation begin. When it’s finished, you find you have a bunch of new buttons, features and programs that you not only weren’t expecting, but do not need nor want. It also resets your default home page and search engine, and it won’t let you change it back. Without realizing it, you could have given away certain personal rights such as your interactions on social networks, personal information that can be shared, the right to record web pages and content that you view.

Bottom Line: Read the EUL

It only makes sense to spend some time reading the EULA before installing software. You might learn something about the software and how it will affect your configurations. Or you could avoid annoyances that wait on the other end of the installation.  Any lawyer will tell you don’t sign anything you haven’t read. The same should apply to any EULA.
