5 Tips to Keep Your Computer Network Safe

The internet enables us work at a faster pace with constant communication and an abundance of information at our fingertips. While there are many benefits to utilizing the internet for work, there are many risks as well. Whether you are working from home or an office, you need to ensure that your computer network is safe from hackers, viruses, worms and other malware. Here are five tips to help keep your computer network safe:

1. Install updates

Many programmers will make errors in their software, which is not discovered until after it is released. For this reason, software companies will send out periodic updates to their software users. It is essential that you check frequently for these updates and install them to avoid vulnerability in your network. Hackers specifically look for the software errors or gaps to attack and gain access to your computer.

2. Keep your passwords secure

Never use the same set of passwords on every site or email account you have opened. If it is hacked, your personal information is at a high risk. Realistically, it is not possible to remember every password you have used. Get a program to help manage your passwords. Alternatively, create a standard password format that you will be using.

3. Do not open attachments from strangers

Never open email attachments sent by strangers. Delete the email instead. Malicious hackers use attachments to quickly spread viruses throughout computer networks. If you need to open an attachment from a stranger, use your virus program to scan it first.

4. Delete emails stating that you won a prize

This is common fraud bait. Malicious hackers send you emails allegedly from a major corporation with a brand name you recognize. In this email, they request you provide a set of personal details so they can transfer your winnings into your bank account. Other email fraud baits include, inheritance stories, free gifts and national bank transfers. Delete these emails immediately and do not provide them with any personal information.

5. Ignore web pop-ups

When browsing the internet, you will come across ads that camouflage as antivirus programs. If you take the bait, the ad will show a pretense of scanning your computer. You will then receive a message that the computer has viruses and you need to install their software immediately. In such situations, close your browser and the messages will disappear.
