New Safe Browsing Feature Web Browsers Protects Users

New and improved Google Safe Browsing enhancements were introduced to the world in late summer of 2014, with the goal of protecting users from malware and online security threats. While San Diego IT support specialists and consultants support this added level of protection for users, Safe Browsing also gained attention on a global level.

The UK’s International Business Times stopped short of labeling Google’s tweaks to Safe Browsing as a ‘paradigm shift’, but a paradigm shift is precisely what these changes ushered in last August. Now, Safe Browsing technology is not only hyper aware of obvious malware threats, it also seeks out programs cleverly disguised as harmless which still contain malware coding.

Safe Browsing was built with the intention of protecting webmasters, providing information about detected threats and showing warnings to encourage safer web security practices among businesses and individuals alike. The technology that Google uses for Safe Browsing has the ability to examine billions of URLs on a daily basis, creating a catalog of unsafe sites, including legitimate websites that have been compromised.

The unsafe sites reported by Google fall into two categories:

  1. Malware Sites – Hackers gain private or sensitive information via malware, or malicious software that is installed onto a user’s computer without his or her knowledge.
  2. Phishing Sites – Websites that mimic legitimate websites, hoping to have the user enter their user name and password or other sensitive account information. This information is then stolen and used to access bank accounts and other personal and protected data.

Of course Google isn’t the only option when it comes to Safe Browsing. From Apple to internet security giant AVG, Safe Browsing options are becoming the norm and are instrumental in enhancing network security and protecting ourselves against possible security threats.
